The Borah girls softball team claimed their first-ever 5A State Championship on Saturday, beating defending state champion Owyhee 12-8 in a winner-take-all game. The Lions (18-10) took a 10-1 lead with an eight-run fifth inning, then held off a late charge by the Storm. NNU baseball season ends at regionals
The Northwest Nazarene baseball team went two-and out at the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament, falling 8-6 in 10 innings to San Francisco State in the opening game of the day, then losing 6-3 to host Cal State Monterey Bay later in the day. Against San Francisco State, the Nighthawks tied the game with RBI hits by Kaleb Karpstein, Carter Walsh and Gavin Brubaker in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Gators were able to get two runs in the top of the tenth inning and holding Northwest Nazarene without a run in the bottom half of the frame. Adam Paganelli had a solo home run in the second inning to put Northwest Nazarene up 1-0, but the Sea Otters took the lead with a three-run home run in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth innings. The Nighthawks end their season with a 36-14-1 record.
