Community pools go through final maintenance checks ahead of Memorial Day weekend
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — As Pennsylvanians look ahead to Memorial Day weekend, community pools across the region are preparing to open for the summer season. In Mechanicsburg, crews spent most of Friday testing the water and checking the equipment of the Mechanicsburg Borough Pool. Public works officials say they have been preparing for months to open on Memorial Day weekend.
Charged with records tampering, ex-borough manager appears in Cumberland County court
A former borough manager accused of cooking financial books to hide thousands of dollars of debt from elected officials waived his first court hearing Thursday morning. Fred Potzer, 62, of Newville, said he “robbed Peter to pay Paul”, when he moved money between the borough and water and sewer authority without proper authorization to make ends meet for the small town of Newville in Cumberland County.

Memorial Day 2024: What grocery stores and retailers are open?
Memorial Day is a holiday for military members who died in the line of duty and is typically observed on the last Monday of May. This year the holiday is on May 27. Government offices, banks and schools are among the places closed for the day, but numerous grocery stores and retail stores are open for limited or regular hours.

Joseph McConnell was born in Pennsylvania about 1745. He served in the Cumberland County, Pennsylvania militia. Under a 1777 Pennsylvania law, most Pennsylvania male adults were required to serve. It is difficult to know what Joseph McConnel did in the Revolutionary War because of the rotational nature of militia duty in Pennsylvania. Cumberland County bridge to be named in honor of ‘Black Hawk Down’ hero
Army Sgt. 1st Class Randall Shughart was 35 when he was killed in action during the infamous Black Hawk Down mission in Somalia in 1993.
