Another shortage of certified bus drivers in the Challis School District could pose problems for sports team travel. School board members heard from district Transportation Director Blain Aldous about the ongoing trouble he has hiring bus drivers. One driver recently quit. The transportation assistant’s work week was increased to 44 hours to cover for the loss of that driver. The assistant didn’t want the additional hours, Aldous said, but there were no alternatives. Currently Aldous is the lone substitute bus driver, he said.

Challis native Kelli Ann Strand wrapped up her first year as a college golfer by setting a couple of golf records at the University of Nebraska. Strand led Nebraska at the May 8-10 NCAA Regional in Raleigh, North Carolina, to finish in a tie for 30th place individually. Her three-day score of 220 on 54 holes was four over par. That matched the best score by a Husker individual in NCAA Regional history.

A couple more trophies were added to the case at Challis High School with wins by the girls golf team. They won the District 6 2A title, played on their home course in Challis May 8 and 9. A week later they brought home the fourth place 2A state title.

Note: This is an updated version of a story that ran last week. The Challis girls golf team finished fourth at the 2A state tournament last week, with Ali Rembelski finishing the two-day event tied for 14th with a score of 191. Bindi Frost placed tied for 16th and Callyn Zollinger placed 22nd for Challis.

Challis High School graduate Lane Strand has been named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference 2022-23 All-Academic Team for men’s golf. Strand, a junior at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, is one of four NNU men’s golfers to make the all-academic team. Just three conference member colleges had four athletes on the list — NNU, Montana State University Billings and Western Washington University.

JR Baker’s fast talking auctioneer skills were in full force at last week’s fundraising auction for the Challis rodeo team. Rodeo team members from Challis Junior Senior High School paraded across a small stage showing off auction items as Baker revved up the 100-plus bidders, pressing for higher bids which means more money to help the student athletes.

Challis High School graduate Kelli Ann Strand placed fifth in a field of 75 golfers at the first tournament of the college spring season. Strand shot a five under par 211 over three rounds on the par 72 course. Her scores were 70 on rounds 1 and 2 and 71 on round 3. The tournament was held Feb. 6 and 7.

MUD LAKE — The West Jefferson Scholastic team traveled to Challis last week to compete against teams from Challis and Mackay in the Scholastic Bowl. The team included the following students: Emma Sauer, Ryker Babcock, Anna Parker, Mayli Allen, and Lili Allen. The team will have a meet in March hosted by the INL.

Kade Bruno’s “make or break time” to be a professional rodeo competitor seems to have hit the “make” point. Bruno, a 2019 graduate of Challis High School, qualified for next month’s National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. He heads to Thomas & Mack Center ranked No. 9 in the world in saddle bronc riding, notching PRCA career earnings of $137,726. A year ago the now-22-year-old was ranked 28th in the event.
