SALEM, Ore. – The deadline for eligible local governments and non-profits to apply for FEMA funds following the severe winter storms, straight-line winds, landslides and mudslides that occurred in January is almost here. The Oregon Department of Emergency Management’s Public Assistance Program gives money to local, tribal and state...
As I See It
I love the history associated with this first story, which I found in the Feb. 10, 1982, Western World, with the headline "Coast Guard Building Plans Revealed." "Although the plans are still in the tentative stages, the Bandon Historical Society's museum could be moving -- a couple of blocks. Now that the Port of Bandon has acquired the old Coast Guard building (first photo), located along the waterfront on First Street, there is a good possibility that it will someday house the museum, in addition...
State of the Parks: South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve
Though technically not a ‘park’, the South Slough Reserve is an essential resource for Coos County and the entire South Coast. In addition to providing the public with education on and access to a beautiful, well-maintained natural space, the Reserve is necessary for protecting environments and species that are crucial to local industry and commerce. I took the short trip down Seven Devils Road to speak with Deborah Rudd, the Public Involvement Coordinator for the Reserve, who gave us plenty of insight and access to...
Letter: Drew Farmer wants to set the record straight
This is Drew Farmer writing to address a misunderstanding regarding a recent article on Coos Bay’s Declaration of Emergency. It should not be construed, at all, that the declaration is an alternative to the Public Safety Levee. The Declaration of Emergency is a push for temporary state support. This would require the sheriff’s office to request aid first from neighboring jurisdictions, which won’t have the ability, then to the state. The state will indicate wanting repayment; however, I maintain the belief that we can make...
Community Spirit Shines as Local Scouts Revitalize Mingus Park
The City of Coos Bay has started a cleanup initiative at Mingus Park, centered around the historic WPA Scout Cabin. This effort, which began on April 10, is part of the Adopt-A-Park Pilot Program and involves community volunteers. On April 14, members of the Oregon Trail Council from the Chinook-Wacoma District of Scouts BSA participated. They cleared debris, brush, and ivy from the area. Local Scout troops, including Coquille Troop #314 and Coos Bay Troop #68, also joined the cleanup. The project helped improve the park and encouraged community involvement. Volunteers, including Josh, Logan, and Xavier Simons, as well as Jerry and Elliot Jannsen, were instrumental in the effort. Their participation was documented with a photo inside the cabin, celebrating the success of the project.'Visit here for more details.
N. 7th Street & Ivy Avenue Road Closure
The City of Coos Bay is in the process of upgrading the existing wastewater treatment plant, located at 680 Ivy Street. The contractor performing the work is McClure and Sons Incorporated. The construction activities will require the closure of N. 7th Street and Ivy Street from Hemlock Avenue to the intersection at 6th Street. The duration of the closure will be dependent on the work schedule for this phase of construction and is expected to extend as long as six months. It is anticipated for the road closure to begin the second week of May and continue through October of 2024. Should you have any questions or want more information, please contact Jennifer Wirsing at (541) 269-1181 ext. 3521 or email jwirsing@coosbayor.gov.
Letter: Please, no coast development of wind turbines
It seems pretty clear to me the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, BOEM, is proceeding with its plans to enable global energy companies to construct massive electricity producing off-shore floating wind turbines along the 100-miles of the Curry, Coos and Douglas shorelines. Though our communities are united in objecting to this plan, the BOEM is about ready to lease our Pacific Ocean coastal waters to these energy conglomerates. We also have observed the environmental science and integrity of public discourse regarding the impact of these floating off-shore wind turbines (reaching higher than 900” into the sky) has been corrupted with...
