A Bayfield man is accused by authorities of assaulting and threatening to kill a Red Cliff police officer. The man is also accused of threatening to kill the emergency responders who tried to help him after the officer reportedly tased him. The attorney for an Ashland man charged with shooting and killing two people used a recent court appearance to contend the defendant’s continued custody is unlawful. Authorities arrested Nathan Monkelien, 36, in October 2023 after the shooting deaths Manuel and Luis Garcia Salas of Veracruz, Mexico.
