Nearly 600 gardening enthusiasts and others seeking tips on how to become one attended last weekend’s 12th annual Albemarle Master Gardener Spring Garden Show. Novelist Alexander discusses life of Black biz woman Josephine N. Leary
Novelist Kianna Alexander discussed Chowan County real estate owner Josephine N. Leary’s life at Museum of the Albemarle’s “History for Lunch” program on Wednesday. Alexander’s “Carolina Built” is a novel that’s based on actual events from Leary’s “remarkable life,” she told audience members. Josephine Napolean Leary lived from April 1856 to March 1923 and her life was “marked by so many different ups and downs” and challenges that “she had...

Arts in Bloom complements CAC's Easels in the Garden
Chowan Arts Council Director Meredith Timberlake wanted an art display to complement the Cupola House’s Easels in the Gardens festival, which was held the weekend of April 26-27. Her solution was simple and effective: Arts in Bloom. Arts in Bloom is a series of flower arrangements by local artists and art patrons designed to complement specific paintings that hang on the Arts Council gallery’s walls. ...

Musicians jam informally on Edenton's Broad Street
EDENTON — They say if you find a spot where two musicians play, more will be there shortly — complete with guitar cases, harmonicas, and fiddles. Some things are just predictable, like a force of nature. Chris O’Neill recently started a monthly jam session at the Surf, Wind, and Fire, an outdoor shop in downtown Edenton. The session meets irregularly and is open to the public, but it’s not a concert. Jam sessions are more about the musicians than the audience, though the audience is...
Tobias column: Chorale concert will pierce your heart with beauty
I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of singing with my friends in the Albemarle Chorale for seven years. We’ve sung a lot of wonderful music. But this spring’s concert, I think, will be the loveliest and most meaningful. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Edenton Resolves (which was a revolutionary action of defiance against the British Crown by 51 courageous women who did not hide behind disguises), the Chorale is singing 11 works either lyricized or composed (or both) by female poets and...
Strawberries are a good indicator of spring
Nothing says spring more than strawberries. Their delicate little flowers and juicy berries seem to drip from each leafy plant. It’s tempting to put more strawberries in your mouth than in your basket when out in the berry patch. Many strawberry farms offer their berries at Edenton Farmers Market. The berries from Cedar Stretch Farm sold out quickly on the first day they appeared, but will be replenished throughout the strawberry season. ...

Albemarle Chorale concerts to showcase women's music
EDENTON — Women composers and their music will take center stage during the Albemarle Chorale’s upcoming spring concerts. According to a Chorale press release, music selected for “A Woman’s Voice: Music by Women” will range from spirituals and jazz to hymns and folk tunes. Some of the music on the program was written in the last decade, while other selections were written more than a century ago. What all of the music has in common is that it was composed by women. ...

Paint the town: Lively paints new mural in downtown Edenton
EDENTON — Matt Lively is already known in Edenton for his mural on the side of the Chowan Arts Council building on Water Street. That work emphasizes historic structures and features whimsical unicycle-riding bumble bees. The Richmond artist, who is well known for his murals in public spaces, has created a new mural the corner of Broad and King streets highlighting the town’s image as a premium freshwater fishing and historic tourism destination. ...

Tobias column: Edenton's Cupola House and the obligations of history
I’m a lucky guy. I’m one of the docents at the Cupola House, and I get to introduce visitors to what architectural historians have called “one of the most distinctive and important dwellings of its period in the South.” Designated as a National Landmark in 1971, the Cupola House was built in 1758 by Francis Corbin. It is something of a miracle: there are many reasons why this building may not have survived. It stands today as a national testament to local dedication and grass-roots...
PAL to host SilverArts, Wassink, Weekley exhibits
The Perquimans Arts League is currently displaying artworks by senior citizen artists from Perquimans and area counties in its annual SilverArts exhibit. The exhibit, which continues on display at the PAL Gallery through April 29, is a program coordinated by the Albemarle Commission’s Area Agency on Aging and, according to a PAL press release, is “a celebration of the creative expression of seniors in North Carolina.” Works by artists from...
