While most school districts in the Southern Tier passed their budgets Tuesday night, two districts voted against the proposed numbers.

Three doctoral students were selected for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science Graduate Student Research (DOE SCGSR) Program’s 2023 Solicitation 2 Cycle. Michael Colletta, a doctoral candidate in applied physics; Virginia McGhee, a doctoral candidate in chemistry and chemical biology; and Liana Shpani, a physics doctoral candidate, are three of 86 graduate students selected for the program.

ITHACA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Taxpayers overwhelmingly rejected the budget plan that administrators proposed for the Ithaca City School District’s upcoming school year. The spending plan rejected Tuesday, May 21, came with a tax levy increase of 8.42% for taxpayers, down from 12.14% as initially proposed before the Board of Education trimmed nearly $2 million in proposed spending.

After Tristan Ahtone, Robert Lee and Margaret Pearce published their research on Land-Grab Universities in their exposé for High Country News in 2020, Cornell University could no longer hide. It damningly holds the title of being the number one beneficiary of the 1862 Morrill Act, a dubious accolade earned on the fact that Cornell singlehandedly seized 1/10 of all the Indigenous lands granted and gained 1/3 of all the revenues generated by the Act. On its own website, Cornell University observes — as passively and innocently as possible — that “we recognize that lands distributed to states to support the founding of universities were previously taken by the federal government.” The phrasing suggests as if, somehow, the grabbing of Indigenous lands was something someone else did, and it is only by chance that Cornell University, by the nature of it being in the populously settled New York state, benefited the most from Indigenous dispossession. But, as research by Professor Jon Parmenter demonstrates, Ezra Cornell personally speculated in the scrips from New York, Wisconsin, Kansas and Minnesota that would provide him with the landed wealth to establish his “any person, any study” vision for the academic institution that he founded. Cornell would not exist without the almost one million acres its founder personally helped steal from over 251 Indigenous nations and communities throughout North America. When Indigenous students and scholars refer to Cornell’s founding as genocidal, they mean that literally. The stripping of land, the reduction of Indigenous peoples to the smallest parcels of holdings on their traditional and customary territories, the forced assimilation and the loss of language was, in each instance, a violent, deadly endeavor toward the pursuit of — through any means necessary — the elimination of Indigenous peoples.

(JTA) – The student encampment at Cornell University is disbanding, in a rare instance of a campus pro-Palestinian protest dissolving on its own. Encampments at a series of other schools have ended only after schools made agreements with protesters or called in police. Police action has led to thousands of arrests, chaotic scenes of violence and accusations of suppressing free speech. Agreements with protesters have incurred the wrath of many in the organized Jewish community, who argue that the encampments should face consequences for encouraging antisemitic behavior.

A 1998 graduate of Ithaca College, Anomaly advertising agency co-founder Jason DeLand, will deliver an address as part of Ithaca College’s 129th Commencement festivities this Sunday, May 19th, according to a statement from the college on Tuesday. Graduating senior Mikayla Tolliver will speak on behalf of the Class of 2024.

On Tuesday, May 14, the Ithaca City School District board of education held a public budget hearing, which saw an unconventionally large crowd in comparison to previous years budget hearings. Similar to the April 16 meeting where many members of the public voiced their concerns over the proposed budget, all seats in the meeting room were filled, with individuals lined up along the wall.

Aurora, N.Y.--An off-and-on drizzle made it hard to distinguish the tears from raindrops during the final commencement ceremony at Wells College on Saturday, May 18, 2024. The final diploma was handed out after the school’s financial struggles of 15 years finally forced the 156-year-old liberal arts college to close its doors. Students requested the president of the school, Jonathan Gibraltar, to take a back seat for commencement activities for this final ceremony, said spokesperson Kristopher LaGreca, VP of Marketing and Communications at the school, and that is just what he did, as the popular and close-knit faculty were front and center much to the graduates’ glee.

Cornell Law School will implement a groundbreaking expansion of its Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) starting in June, providing full federal loan repayments for graduates in public interest jobs earning up to $120,000 annually. This represents a significant increase from the previous cap of $80,000 and sets a new benchmark among U.S. law schools.
