In a must-win for both teams, the Aztecs took a page out of the ground, pound and smother recipe book and deep fried the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in front of 31,307. Aztec running back Marquez Cooper took every handoff from Danny O’Neil on his way to 109 yards on 30 carries and two scores. He also added 28 yards on four receptions becoming the key essential ingredient in the Aztecs workman like 27-24 victory over Hawaii. There were questions about running back as Cooper took a few days off of practice this last week to heal a minor injury. Other Aztec backs practiced during the week, but when game time rolled around, Cooper was dressed out, front and center and ready to take control of the running game. Aztec quarterback Danny O’Neil rose to a boil with a 24/34 passing outing for 224 yards and a score with no turnovers. Wideout Nate Bennett caught four balls for 74 yards, Jordan Napier added five catches for 41 and Loyis Brown IV added 40 more yards on five receptions. All in all, seven players caught balls from O’Neil who looked in. control running the Aztec’s predictable ground beef offense. On defense, the Aztecs were led by sensational Edge rusher Trey White who had five tackles and three sacks to bring his season total to nine. This puts him in a tie nationally with Boston College defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku. Dalsean Staley added 8 more tackles to the defensive effort.
