Woman riding motorized scooter dies in Northeast Philly crash, police say
A 48-year-old woman riding a motorized scooter died Wednesday night in Northeast Philly after colliding with an SUV, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. The crash happened just after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Frankford Avenue and Academy Road. Small said the 48-year-old was riding a motorized scooter northbound on Frankford when it collided with a 20-year-old driving a Kia SUV traveling southbound. As the Kia made a left turn onto Academy Road, Small said it collided with the 48-year-old and knocked her off the motorized scooter. Police found the woman lying in the northbound lanes of Frankford Avenue following the crash. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 9:53 p.m., according to Small. The 48-year-old woman was traveling with about five or six other people riding dirt bikes or other motorized scooters before the crash, according to witnesses. The others fled the scene, Small said. Small said that the 20-year-old driver of the Kia remained on the scene.

14-year-old girl fatally struck in West Philly hit-and-run, police say
A 14-year-old girl who was crossing the street with her mother was killed in a hit-and-run in West Philly on Thursday night, Inspector Michael Gormley of the Philadelphia Police Department said. The hit-and-run happened on the 6500 block of Haverford Avenue just before 9:45 p.m., according to Gormley. The 14-year-old girl was pronounced dead on the scene. Gormley said police are searching for a dark gray Mercedes sedan with heavy damage that fled the scene. Gormley said the 14-year-old girl and her mother were coming back from the store with groceries at the intersection of Haverford Avenue and 66th Street before the hit-and-run. As the two crossed the street, Gormley said the 14-year-old girl was struck by the Mercedes traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. Gormley said police are working to find cameras that might've captured the hit-and-run. He said there weren't any witnesses of the incident besides the 14-year-old's mother, who was distraught following the crash. The hit-and-run is under investigation.
Beef theft leads to charges for Philly trio
