The Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo will close nearly 80 parishes and worship sites in Western New York due to financial trouble, the diocese announced Tuesday. The Buffalo Diocese initially recommended 40 churches to close or merge in June, four years after filing for bankruptcy. The diocese is also facing declining numbers in priests, parishioners and donations as it also pays out at least $100 million to settle nearly 900 cases of child sex abuse.
