Hospitals battle in court over service districts. Parish councils could intervene
Two of the largest hospitals in Terrebonne and Lafourche are fighting in court over turf. The parish councils could step in to resolve the issue. The lawsuit is playing out in Judge Jason Dagate's courtroom as a dozen attorneys make arguments about why Thibodaux Regional can or cannot move into Terrebonne General's service district space. They will return April 30 to deliver closing arguments in front of Dagate.
Terrebonne Parish Mardi Gras parade laws often violated, rarely cited, authorities say
More than 5,000 words of a Terrebonne Parish ordinance governing carnival conduct are violated regularly, but few people are charged. The 2006 ordinance defines what people can bring to Mardi Gras parades the behavior of riders, krewes, and parade goers alike. A violation is a misdemeanor carrying up to a $500 fine and/or up to 30 days in jail.
Ida Shelters program coming to an end April 30, will save Louisiana $2 million a month
The state-run Ida Shelters program officially will end this month, affecting about 800 people statewide who are homeless since Hurricane Ida. When Hurricane Ida tore through Lafourche and Terrebonne Aug. 29, 2021, officials recognized the Federal Emergency Management Agency would take time to respond. FEMA agreed to fund the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness's emergency housing program: Ida Shelters. The program housed more than 3,500 people in Terrebonne and Lafourche, and rolled its first campers out three weeks after the storm.
