The KRKO Russell & Hill 2024 Female Student Athlete of the Year is Jackson High School, multi-sport athlete Yanina Sherwood. A nationally ranked force in the pitching circle, Yanina pitched every inning during Jackson’s 2023 run to the State 4A Softball Championship (a 5-1 victory over Glacier Peak in the title game). In 2024 the Timberwolves did it again, with Sherwood pitching 167 innings, recording 273 strikeouts, while walking just 23 batters and compiling a microscopic 0.54 ERA. Outscoring their opponents 33-3 in the four state tournament games; Jackson defeated Emerald Ridge 10-1 in the championship game. Yanina also pitched a perfect game in the 2024 District 1/2 Tournament title game. She was no slouch at the plate either, hitting .392 with 10 home runs and 35 RBI. Her accomplishments also include back-to-back Washington State Player of the Year by MaxPreps, ScorebookLive and Gatorade; and National First Team honors from MaxPreps. Besides her accolades on the softball diamond, Sherwood also competed on the Timberwolves’ girls volleyball team where she was named 2nd team All-Wesco and went to the state tournament twice. In her spare time she plays tenor saxophone in the Jackson Wind Ensemble. Her Saxophone Quintet “Statewind Serenades” also competed at the Washington State Solo & Ensemble contest at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. Yanina maintained a 3.63 grade point average at Jackson High School.
