, The Rattlers finally got back on the Gridiron Friday night. San Marcos’ White team prevailed 42-10 and had an explosive night, with Purple’s lone touchdown being a defensive pick six early in the game. “I think the defense started out [great], they’ve done really well against the run all spring long and it showed tonight — we didn’t run the ball great. It’s because they’re loading the box and they’re playing tough in the middle. [Offensively] with...

SMHS golf players, coaches celebrate a successful season
The SMHS Golf Team wrapped up a successful season and reflected on reaching the three goals it set for the year. The first goal was to grow the program, said second-year coach Everett Mungia. “Two years ago, when we inherited the team from the coach who was retiring, there were only eight students on the team. We now have 29 golfers.” A strategy for increasing the team’s size was for him and second-year Assistant Coach William McWhorter to recruit and work with interested students at Miller and Goodnight Middle Schools. “We are one of the only high schools in the area that has...
Texas softball will host Texas A&M in NCAA Tournament. When and where do they play?
Considering that the two schools are linked by 100 miles of Central Texas highway as well as the constant chatter between two bombastic fan bases, the Texas and Texas A&M softball teams haven’t met much since the Aggies left the Big 12 way back in 2012. But that will change this weekend, when 16th-seeded Texas A&M will travel to Austin for a best-of-three series against No. 1 Texas in the NCAA super regionals. The winner will qualify...
Man sentenced to 32 years for indecency with child in Hays County
SAN MARCOS — Hays County Criminal District Attorney Kelly Higgins announced today that Bradley Don Simpson, 28, was sentenced to 32 years in prison for indecency with a child in Hays County. Simpson was charged pursuant to an investigation that occurred in February 2020 following an outcry by the 8-year-old daughter of the family that had, in an act of kindness and charity, taken Simpson into their home, according to a Hays County news release. Simpson appeared for sentencing on May 23, 2024, when Judge Tanner Neidhardt sentenced him to 15 years each on two counts and 17 years on the third count, ordering the third count to run consecutively, for a total of 32 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the release continued. The case was prosecuted by Hays County Assistant District Attorney Abigail Whitaker, who stated that the outcome in this case has brought closure to the family and justice to Simpson.

Remembering favorite local area running routes
I received a text message from my friend, Darrell Rhodes, with a photo of a pickup with an orange Gatorade cooler in the bed of it. His text was, “My first thought was the truck is going to a 5K race.” I replied, “Darrell, you have been volunteering at too many 5K races over the years.” It made me think how many times my pickup was loaded down with a race clock, cones, direction signs, and four or five Gatorade coolers. It started me thinking of the difference between races we put on in the 1980’s versus today with more...
