Gallery: Weezer brings out-of-this-world Blue Album Tour to Golden 1
Alt-rock band Weezer touched down at Golden 1 Center on Tuesday night, to bring their ‘Voyage to the Blue Planet’ tour to the Capital’s fans. The tour celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Blue Album; Weezer’s first studio effort and one of the most highly regarded albums of the 1990s. The blue planet tour is a voyage through Weezer’s most-coveted alt-rock hits performed in front of an over-the-top cosmic experience, one that provided enough rocket fuel to launch the four musicians into the arena band space. Weezer has built upon a popular trend of bands performing full albums at concerts by front-loading their set with fan favorites chosen by way of an online survey, and then showcasing that music inside a wildly outrageous stage set reminiscent of a themepark ride. Sacramento witnessed its first sighting of this spectacle when a giant Weezer branded spaceship lifted up into the atmosphere, leaving behind four intrepid musicians to save the planet by performing their blue album. Fog spilled out on to the stage, planets descended from the rafters, and UFO’s sped across an earth-sized LED screen while lead singer Rivers Cuomo navigated his crew through the nearly 120-minute set that left Sacramento’s stargazers gasping for oxygen. Weezer enlisted bands the Flaming Lips, and Dinosaur Jr. to help complete their mission.
