LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The Jegna Corporation continues work to revitalize a residential house on Lima's south end into a community resource. Part of the Ujima House Project, the property located at 1307 St. Johns Avenue is currently being transformed into the MBK Community Outreach House for several different programs. A garden will also be constructed where fresh fruits and vegetables will be grown. Leaders with the project say this opportunity will help give residents a place to grow and build new skills.

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Lima City Schools will accept a grant to assist with the purchase of 4 electric school buses. The district was selected to receive a $1.4 million EPA Clean School Bus Grant to cover the little over $1.7 million total price tag. In addition to the 4 new electric school buses, the purchase will come with the needed electrical infrastructure and charging stations. District administrators say this is a step toward going greener while also being economically savvy.

VAN WERT — The Van Wert volleyball team picked up a much-needed win Saturday afternoon — a hard-fought 25-11, 27-25, 18-25, 25-20 win over Waynesfield-Goshen. The Lady Cougars are now 2-18. The Lady Tigers are 10-9. Van Wert totally dominated the first set from start to finish. With junior setter Brissia Ickes doing the serving, the Cougars scored nine straight points to turn a 2-1 lead into 11-1. That run included two aces by Ickes. After that the set was never in doubt — 25-11, Van Wert. The match then changed dramatically as the visitors got their act together and made things interesting.

Two Putnam County League games this week with both having major impacts on the Championship race. On Tuesday Continental Girls Soccer host Kalida for senior night and a chance for the Pirates to clinch a PCL. Defeat Kalida and the Pirates finish with a 4-0-1 PCL. A loss or tie opens up the title to either Kalida 3-0 PCL or Columbus Grove 1-0-2. Volleyball has the Pirates hosting Ottoville where a Big Green win will give them at least a share of the PCL crown. Currently Ottoville, Leipsic, and Miller City all have 4-1 PCL records. Volleyball will have Senior night on Monday when they host Paulding. Boys Soccer starts the week at Pettisville on Tuesday and then finishes off the regular season hosting Wauseon on Thursday for Senior night. Girls Soccer finishes off the Pirates fall regular season by making a trip to Bryan.

LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - A Lima City councilman is looking to teach kids about money responsibility during his annual Halloween party. On October 27th at Hover Park, Derry Glenn will be hosting his annual event. There will be candy for the kids and hot dogs for people that come out. But besides the candy, Derry Glenn will be giving out saving bonds to a few of the kids for best costume or best GPA on their last report card. Glenn says he wants to add a teachable moment during his events, and the savings bonds help the kids learn fiscal responsibility.

LIMA — Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith said she would direct the city engineer to request proposals for traffic calming at Monday night’s Council of the Whole meeting. The Council of the Whole continued its discussion on reducing unsafe driving from Tuesday, Sept. 24 (bit.ly/4gwRaFo) after a regular council meeting that saw council honoring former city councilman and cartoonist David Adams after his passing Aug. 9.

As the world of athletics evolve with the times, the sport of high school wrestling has also begun to change. IN the early 1990s the wrestling clubs in high school across the country started to include females in their rosters with a few as 100 girls those first few years. That number has steadily risen over the past decades until girls wrestling became its own sanctioned sport with OHSAA in Ohio in 2022 (along with boys volleyball). In Paulding County, girls wrestling has had a good following and participation and Wayne Trace has its first girls wrestling team beginning with the 2024-25 season.

BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Earlham Women's Golf team returned to action after an off week at the Beaver Fall Classic at the Bluffton Golf Club. The team finished 7th in the 8-team competition. The Quakers were led by junior Macky Laughlin (Richmond, IN) who shot a personal 36-hole record 190 (+46) in route to a 30th place finish. A trio of first-years also had their season-best outings, Brileigh Quillen-Popejoy (Kokomo, IN), Erin Wright (Muncie, IN) and Ellen Morrill (Beavercreek, OH.)

LIMA, OHIO (WLIO) - The Lima Senior Choral Music Department continues a long tradition of singing sacred music for sacred spaces. This year, the voices of the Spartan Singers, Spartanaires, and Masterworks choirs filled the space of St. Rose Catholic Church with works like Ave Maria and a spiritual from African American composer William Dawson, along with various other hymns and gospels. The choirs are happy that Lima churches open their doors to let them perform sacred music.

LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio on Monday promoted Scott Millsaps to assistant athletic director, according to a news release. Millsaps worked with 13 varsity teams at UNOH as the university’s head strength and conditioning coach, a role he held since 2013, and has been responsible for the women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball programs during his tenure.

ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - Crossroads Crisis Center honors the victims of domestic violence during their 25th annual tree planting. The tree was planted at the Moyer Nature Center in the nature preserve at Bluffton University, which is the first tree planting that has happened outside of the Lima area. The tree symbolizes the lives that continue to grow after domestic violence, and it is planted in memory of victims that died and in honor of survivors of abusive relationships.

Sometimes the biggest plays of the game do not appear in the box score and that was the case on Thursday as Continental remained in the Putnam County League title hunt at Ottoville. The Big Green got credit for the only goal in the first half with 12 minutes left in the half when a corner kick to the near corner of the goal was headed in by a Pirate defender. The Pirates almost tied the game at 1 with 10:13 left in the half but the ball hit the post. Then the play of the game occurred with 2:30 left in the half as the Big Green set up to take another corner kick. This one was placed 10 yards away from the goal and even with the goal post and the Pirate goalie went out to make a play. A loose ball resulted in a Big Green shot into the weak side corner that Pirate Defender Abby Rue came in from nowhere to kick it out of harms way. First half ended 1-0 Big Green.

BLUFFTON — Bluffton College will return to being following the merger of Bluffton University and University of Findlay, the schools announced Saturday night. The boards of trustees for Bluffton University and University of Findlay agreed to rename the Bluffton campus “Bluffton College” after completing the merger. It still requires approval from the Higher Learning Commission, U.S. Department of Education and Ohio Department of Education.
