Area athletes place at Abbotsford meet
Chequamegon senior Autumn Michalski continues winning and breaking her own records in the process. She joined other teammates with outstanding performances along with those of Prentice and Rib Lake at the Abbotsford High School meet on April 29. Third “Stick” Furtak scholarship tournament
The village of Butternut honored the memory of a former village supervisor, bus driver and longtime baseball and basketball coach with the third annual John “Stick” Furtak Memorial Tournament on April 20. Nate Pritz, a former Butternut baseball coach when Furtak was an assistant coach, spoke in a ceremony prior to the Butternut and Flambeau baseball game. He said the funds raised at the games through concessions and donations result in two $500 annual scholarships for a boy and girl athlete in any sport. ...
Pioneers rally falls short in Drummond
The Butternut/Mercer Pioneer softball team traveled to Grand View on Monday night for a conference matchup against the Drummond Lumberjills. Drummond got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with 3 runs. The Pioneers answered in the top of the second inning with 2 of their own on a big 2 out, 2 RBI hit by Jenny Kopatek. Several Chequamegon athletes placed at the Holy Cow track and field meet at Stratford High School on April 15. GIRLS Chequamegon senior Autumn Michalski won the girls 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.83, and won the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:08.56. Butternut girls drop two at Stick Memorial
The Butternut/Mercer Pioneers softball team braved the cold weather on April 20 to host the annual John "Stick" Furtak Memorial tournament. The girls mounted comebacks after giving up early leads and lost two close games, 8-6 against Hurley, and then 10-6 to Flambeau. Wednesday night league has two champions
The room was big enough for two champions after the season finale of the Wednesday Night Mens Bowling League at Phillips Lanes on April 17, 2024. At the end of the night there were two teams tied for the league championship: the Phillips Lanes team with bowlers Tim Porod, Jack Talley, Don Cooley and Keith Corcilius; and the Complete Rain Gutters team with Erik Potter, Josh Schmidt, John Stotka and Curt Graan. Phillips Lanes won the roll off on April 21. But the tie remains for the weekly competition. The 2023-24 season has now concluded. The league will commence again in the fall.
