A Look Back: These hitters, pitchers dominated the diamond during the 1997 high school baseball season
Charlie Bilezikjian must have felt like the Big Man on Campus at this time 27 years ago. The Port Richmond junior not only led Staten Island in hitting with an eye-popping .574 batting average and RBI with 27 in 1997, but he was the only player from this borough to land among the top pitchers as well. In fact, the power-pitching righty boasted a 6-1 mark with a 3.16 earned run average and an Island-high 80 strikeouts. Bilezikjian, in fact, was named the Staten Island Baseball Oldtimers’ Outstanding Pitcher that season.

Don’t worry, beach happy! City beaches were short on lifeguards but long on fun in the sun as swimming season officially kicked off Saturday in the Big Apple. Thousands of sun worshippers and wanna-be Michael Phelpses were out in full force at the city’s eight public beaches, including Coney Island. Among those celebrating the unofficial start of summer was Vadim, 39, a small business owner from Prospect Lefferts Garden, who enjoys beach volleyball. “The beach is great, the weather is great. Everything is great,” he rejoiced. NJ shore town closes boardwalk and declares state of emergency over ‘unruly’ teens on Memorial Day weekend The specter...
Umpire’s call waves off game-tying home run in New Jersey playoff game
Controversy and New Jersey playoff games seem to go together this academic year. After a high school basketball game ended in a dispute, the Garden State has now seen an umpire’s call play a role in the result of a playoff game. Northern Highlands appeared to hit a game-tying three-run homer by Beckham Stern in its game with Mount Olive on Wednesday. However, Mount Olive’s coach told his team to try an appeal pay. The pitcher stepped off the mound and threw the ball to the catcher who stepped on home plate. The ump ruled the first Northern Highlands player “to score” on the play...
