#TBT: Learn about South Texas curandero Don Pedrito Jaramillo
A curandero and folk saint who died more than a hundred years ago touched so many lives that his mausoleum and shrine outside of Falfurrias still receives visitors. It can be difficult to untangle the facts from the legends about Pedro Jaramillo. But most accounts agree he arrived in Texas in 1881. His parents were Tarascan — one of the indigenous tribes of Mexico — and Jaramillo was born near Guadalajara, Jalisco, sometime in the late 1820s. Sources have listed various dates, most commonly 1827 and 1829.
