Oregon school districts are facing budget shortfalls in the millions next year amid dropping enrollment, attendance, and test scores.

The group’s open enrollment measure would allow students to attend any public school that has available space, not just the school in a district where students live. The school choice measure would allow students to opt out of the public school system and still receive some state funding that could be used for things like tutoring, textbooks or tuition. That money would be deposited in an Education Savings Account, administered by a nonprofit organization chosen by the parent.

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival has relaunched its school outreach program, which takes actors and teaching artists to schools across the West Coast to perform and teach young people about theatre and Shakespeare. OSF founder Angus Bowmer started this program over 40 years ago with one simple goal: to bring Shakespeare into as many schools as possible. The program was paused during the pandemic. Oregon High School Rodeo action took place May 3, 4, and 5, in Prineville. Once again, the Columbia Basin High School Rodeo Club was well represented. Condon's Gracie Garthwaite rode to the Reserve All-Around Girls title for the weekend. In the first round of competition, she tied her goat in 8.61 seconds for a second place finish. With Spray's Oran Davis at the heels, they turned in a fourth place time of 10.90. A time of 3.1 seconds earned Gracie 6th in the breakaway roping. She finished her busy day with a barrel racing time of 18.166 for 7th.

The two Oregon high schoolers selected as this year’s U.S. Presidential Scholars have yet to graduate, but both are already steeped in college-level experiences. Stella Wang from Jesuit High in Beaverton and Richard Chen from Crescent Valley High in Corvallis are the two Oregon students chosen by a White House commission. They join an elite field of high school students from around the country recognized for their achievements in academics, as judged by SAT or ACT scores, high school transcripts, letters of recommendation and essays.

St Augustine defeated #49 Christian Brothers Academy with the winner slated to take the first spot in the New Jersey State Championship game on May 18. St Augustine were coming into this game with a couple of injuries following the tough battle against Georgetown Prep the week prior. St Augustine took an early 10-0 lead after tries from the Scaffidi brothers (Nicholas, the senior and Santino, the junior). Christian Brothers managed to make a comeback, with St Augustine making some mistakes in their own 22; leaving the score 19-10 for CBA at halftime.

(May 7, 2024) — High school students across Oregon have the opportunity to embark on a unique educational journey through "The Oregon Plan," a program offered by the Oregon National Guard. Endorsed by the Oregon Department of Education, this initiative allows students to earn high school credit while gaining professional technical training. Under the umbrella of "The Oregon Plan," students receive payment for their participation as they delve into various career skills, including basic finance, medic training, construction, and engineering. Dr. Charlene Williams, Director of the Oregon Department of Education, expressed enthusiasm for the program, highlighting its potential to enrich students' learning experiences and open doors to future opportunities. Established in 1995 as the Military Career Education Cluster Concept, "The Oregon Plan" enables school districts statewide to grant academic credits to students who complete qualified military training and instruction. Brig. Gen. Alan Gronewold, Adjutant General of Oregon, emphasized the program's longstanding contribution to education pathways for Oregon's youth. Numerous high schools across the state, from Pendleton to Hood River, actively participate in "The Oregon Plan." Through partnerships with the Oregon National Guard, these schools facilitate credit proficiencies through military training, nurturing the development of educated and skilled individuals primed for future success. Lt. Col. Jessy Claerhout, Executive Officer of the Recruiting Retention Command, underscored the program's value in translating military experience into academic progress. ASHLAND, Ore. – SOU says they have the lowest reserve funds of any of the seven universities in Oregon, but they are working on a plan to change that. SOU President Dr. Rick Bailey said they currently have $6 to $7 million in reserve funding, but he wants to have at least enough funding to operate for a Fall quarter in case of an emergency.
