KENTUCKY — On this week’s “In Focus Kentucky” program, we’re looking at K-12 public education in the Commonwealth. The 2024-2025 academic school year started in August for thousands of students across Kentucky’s 171 school districts, which include 120 public school districts and 51 independent districts. These districts serve 1,484 public schools and 634,424 students in grades preschool through 12th.

MURRAY, Ky. – Murray State University’s economic impact on the Commonwealth and the west Kentucky region is highlighted in a recent report. Based on a 2017 comprehensive study led by Professor Emeritus Dr. Gil Mathis, updated for inflation, Murray State University generates more than $633 million in economic output activity for the Commonwealth.

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC) recently received a Plant for the Planet grant from LG&E and KU to purchase trees planted on ECTC’s campus. Based on the United Nations Environment Program’s Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign, the purpose of the grant is to encourage organizations with a record of successful tree planting to continue their efforts. ECTC used the grant to purchase and plant native trees on campus, including oak, redbud, dogwood and maple trees.

Parents who pay both taxes and tuition when their children attend a private school have for years hoped that the state governments would realize that those private schools are performing the duty to educate–just as public schools do. So they believed that at least some of the taxes they pay toward education would allow them to reduce their tuition. Unfortunately that has not happened to-date and Issue #2 is definitely not the answer. Some parents who send their kids to public school are concerned that the public school system is not providing an adequate learning experience for their child. Some are concerned that their kids are thrown in with the general population and the parents would like to segregate their kids from that group. So the GOP-dominated Kentucky Legislature is trying to pass an apparent Charter School amendment that would provide for tax dollars to be re-directed to the school of choice. The hint that private schools might get in on that tuition split has Catholics excited about the prospect of lowering their tuition costs. That won’t happen. The US Constitution, First Amendment, describes what has always been interpreted as “separation of church and state”. So the Kentucky legislators know the ACLU and others will force a change in the proposed Issue #2–if passed to exclude private school funding. But–by then–the Legislators will have duped private school parents into passing the amendment. Bottom line: the GOP will use private school parent votes to get what they want. We paid for private school tuition for many years and we believe that the state should share that cost but Issue #2 will not survive to accomplish that objective. We really wish it would but we see it as a devious ploy to secure enough votes for the Charter School system. BTW, Charter Schools almost never succeed. Ask anyone in any of the bordering states. The answer is: fix the system we already have. Don’t burden taxpayers with duplicated administration, teachers, facilities, etc. Our taxes will need to double to teach the same number of students in duplicated systems. That makes no sense. This is the same Legislature that passed a law last year to allow 18 year olds to carry weapons into their classroom and this year is appropriating $20 million of taxpayer funds to staff a “resource officer” in every high school. They definitely need adult supervision. Check it out.

Bowling Green, Ky. – Election Day is almost here and yet another local superintendent is speaking out against the controversial Kentucky Constitutional Amendment 2. The amendment, which would allow private schools access to public funds, has been a cause of much concern especially among those who work for the public schools around Kentucky. Warren County Public Schools Superintendent Rob Clayton says that public schools will be forced to do more with less and with the work force shortage happening across Kentucky it could be difficult. However Clayton says it would also be detrimental to the most vulnerable members of our community.
