Hoke County Seeks Dismissal of The News-Journal's Public Records Lawsuit
Hoke County, North Carolina, has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by The News-Journal, a newspaper owned by Brown Publishing LLC. The lawsuit stems from a public records request by the newspaper, which the county is disputing. The county argues that Jessica Hendrix Brown, the newspaper's owner and the person who filed the lawsuit, cannot legally do so because she is not a licensed attorney in North Carolina, according to N.C. Gen Stat. § 84-4.

Representatives of Pennsylvania-based gas station and convenience store chain Wawa updated expansion plans for North Carolina on Wednesday. The first store will open Thursday in Kill Devil Hills, with additional outlets planned for Rocky Mount, Elizabeth City, Greenville, Wilson and Goldsboro by the end of 2024. Over the next 10 years, the chain plans to reach a total of 90 outlets statewide.

Major Boost for Local Housing: Lumbee Tribe Receives $10M Increase in Budget
The Lumbee Tribe in Pembroke, NC, will see an increase in their housing budget for the next fiscal year. Tribal Chairman John L. Lowery announced that the budget for the Lumbee Tribe Housing Program will grow by nearly $10 million, from $18.3 million to $28.7 million. This rise is part of a nationwide increase in funding for tribes under the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act of 1996.
