Sacramento’s Homeless Timeline
The homeless population in Sacramento, California has been an ongoing issue for over a decade now.As the years have gone by, the government's actions and solutions have been questionable, leaving many confused and frustrated. Let's take a look at the timeline of events and see if we can make sense of it all. 2006 - The Beginning of the Crisis In 2006, the homeless population in Sacramento started to become noticeable. The Union Gospel Mission on Seventh Street became the very first camp for the homeless. The situation was not as pressing back then, and the government did not take any significant actions to tackle the issue. 2009 - The First Attempt at a Solution By 2009, the number of homeless people in Sacramento had grown significantly. The government finally decided to take action and made a big deal about it. They went to the Seventh Street camp and lined everyone up, offering them a key to a motel room. What seemed like a glimmer of hope turned out to be a nightmare. Three days later, the rooms were taken away, and people were thrown in jail, with or without warrants. The government claimed that they did not need warrants as the rooms were in the city's name. This reckless act only worsened the situation. 2006- 2009 solution : Drug and alcohol services and programs 2012 - 2015The Closure of Mental Institutions In 2012, the government started closing down mental institutions, which housed many homeless people with mental health issues. By 2015, these people were thrown onto the streets with no access to mental health medication. Many of them had been in these institutions for over ten years, and the sudden closure was too much for them to handle. They were left to fend for themselves, leading to an increase in the homeless population on the streets. 2019 - COVID-19 Exacerbates the Problem As if the homeless situation in Sacramento couldn't get any worse, 2019 brought the COVID-19 pandemic. The government's solution this time was mental health services, adding to the confusion among the people. It begs the question, do they want to address the root of the problem, or are they just trying to switch their dealers and try different brands? 20019-present solution: Mental health drugs With no proper plan or process, these actions have only made the situation worse. It seems that the government is neither capable nor willing nor are they educated enough to address the issue effectively. Or is it that they lack empathy. Is it that they lack the devotion, dedication, and honor for their country and the citizen of their country? Um? Or are the human traffickers and dope dealers we protect are children from every day.? Wake up American. We are no longer free.
