Prescription for crisis: Rural pharmacies struggle to stay open
People in rural communities depend on local pharmacies for more than just prescription medicines. Many rural pharmacies offer immunizations, blood pressure testing and other services that can be difficult to get in remote places where traditional health care providers are few and far between. In some areas, a rural pharmacist “may be the only trained health professional in town,” according to Professor Delesha Carpenter of the Eshelman School of Pharmacy at UNC Chapel Hill.
