Gainesville High School students Jarett Hogan and Jenna Uchtman loaded, delivered and unloaded a truck bed full of groceries at the Ozark County Food Pantry last week. The donated food was part of a recent GHS FBLA food drive and fundraiser. The Ozark County Food Pantry distributes food boxes containing USDA commodities and donations twice a month, serving 350 families a month. The pantry is in need of donations to purchase food, which the organization is able to buy at deeply discounted prices through the Ozark Food Pantry. Monetary donations can be made at the Ozark County Health Department, located at 370 Third Street in Gainesville or mailed to Ozark County Food Pantry, P.O. Box 180, Gainesville, Mo. 65655.

Gainesville girls basketball returns six players who saw varsity action for last season’s four-win team. “We are bringing back experience and that is something we haven’t had in a couple years,” said Gainesville head coach Lance West. “Last season was a rebuilding year and we only had two girls with varsity experience. This season we are bringing back six girls with varsity experience, including three starters and two other players that saw 20 plus minutes a game. Our team chemistry is also in a good place right now to start the year and we will continue to build off that. As long as the team has the right mindset, attitude, along with hard work and dedication, we will be able to be that competitive team we want to be.”

There is basketball scheduled for Saturday with the start of the Lead Hill Junior High Tournament. Bergman faces Kingston for a doubleheader starting with the girls at 10, Flippin is set for back-to-back games with Lead Hill at noon, and Ozark Mountain’s doubleheader with Omaha is scheduled for 2.

Basketball makes up much of the local Monday schedule. On the high school level, Cotter hosts Lead Hill, Viola makes the trip to Kingston, and Timbo entertains Oark. Ozark Mountain’s junior high teams will have a doubleheader with Alpena in the Jasper Junior High Tournament. The girls’ game tips off at 5:15 followed by the boys’ contest.

The Missouri State Board of Education recently relaxed requirements to become a new teacher in the Show Me State to help address a growing shortage of teachers. Previously, people looking to get their teaching licenses would have had to pass an assessment. Now, those who score below a passing grade on the assessment can still get their license if they’ve managed to complete other requirements, such as maintaining a 3.0 GPA in their college work and having completed supervised student teaching, according to an Associated Press report.
