(Cleveland)- White County Schools are open today (9/30) for regular class schedules. White County High School officials remind students to bring their fully charged Chromebooks with you to Advisement today. The School District of Oconee County will be closed on Tuesday, October 1st. No students or employees will report to buildings, now will it be an eLearning Day. Superintendent Dr. Michael Thorsland: “After assessing the status of power outages and road conditions this morning, it is clear that we will not be in a place that school is possible for tomorrow. We still have several schools without power and know many families and staff members are without it as well. As we shared yesterday, we will continue to make future decisions day by day, so we have the best chance of getting students back to school as soon as possible.”

LUCY HARVEY – RABUN COUNTY. Senior Lucy Harvey led the Lady Cats last week. The libero tallied 4 digs and an ace, while serving at an 80% clip. This is her first POW award. Becca Heyl continues to be one of the top players in the area. The Tallulah Falls junior outside hitter in 3 matches last week led the #8-ranked Lady Indians with 34 kills, 17 digs, 4 aces, and a .364% hit. This is her second POW award.

Oconee public schools are closed today. No students or employees should report to the buildings. And it is not an eLearning Day. Dr. Thorsland, the superintendent, said, “We know that many families and employees still do not have power and are dealing with damage from the storm.” Several schools, by yesterday afternoon, still had no power. Tonight’s special school board meeting has been cancelled. Clemson University’s main campus and Upstate locations are closed today, and classes cancelled across all statewide campuses. Littlejohn Coliseum and the Snow Family Outdoor Fitness and Wellness Complex are open again today, 10 to 4, with access to power, Wi-Fi, and a limited number of showers.

The missed school days associated with the recent storm will not impact Rabun County Schools calendar, says Superintendent Steven Cole. “Any time we have to miss school it is very unfortunate but there are going to be circumstances that arise due to unforeseen events that are going to cause us to miss school from time to time. As far as we are concerned, the State Law in terms of attendance allows four days for each system to miss school related to disasters, acts of God, or other related emergencies. So, as of now, we have missed four days related to the hurricane that came through but two of those days we did count as virtual learning days, so we don’t have to count those in the four that are allowed but we still have the other two, Monday and Tuesday, that we do have to count towards that but one of the things too is we are also a Strategic Waiver System, which means we have some flexibility related to the laws pertaining to attendance. So, if we go to a situation where we move beyond the other two days allotted then we can work through that system to gain some flexibility there in terms of our attendance for the rest of the year. So, that is where we are at right now. Of course, it is a situation like I said we don’t ever want to miss school if we can help it. Instructional time for students is so important and any day they are out they’re losing another day of instruction and even if it is virtual it is not the best situation and then of course we always consider the wrap-around services that our students receive. When they’re not at school of course they’re not getting the breakfast and lunch sometimes that a lot of kids depend on and things like that. Habersham County, in conjunction with Georgia Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) is collecting supplies to be sent to some of the hardest-hit areas of Georgia. “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by Hurricane Helene,” said Habersham County Emergency Management Agency/E-911 Director Lynn Smith. “The loss of lives and the devastation are unimaginable, and we extend our deepest sympathies. We are incredibly grateful to the men and women who continue to serve their communities, especially the Communications Officers who are still answering calls despite suffering personal losses.” Georgia APCO is coordinating supply deliveries to some of the 911 centers most affected in Georgia, including those in Augusta-Richmond County, Columbia County (Evans area), Burke County, and others. In Habersham County, donations may be dropped off at the Habersham County Ruby Fulbright Aquatic Center, 120 Paul Franklin Road, Clarkesville, or to the Habersham County E-911 Center, 175 EOC Drive (off Chase Road), Cornelia. Collections will take place for about the next two weeks as those affected await power restoration and work to get their lives and homes back in order, and those who live in the cities also are welcome to donate. Donors may feel free to include cards or messages of support for the dispatchers who continue to work despite personal crises. Reminder that no clothes or linens are being accepted.

(Acworth)- The White County Mountain Bike teams participated in their second race of the season on September 22 in Acworth, Georgia. Jeff Defoor, White County High School Mountain Bike Team Head Coach said, “Chase at the Creek” was hot and dry, located at Allatoona Creek Park, but White County High School and Yonah Composite teams had another good showing.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Piedmont men's golf is off to a strong start at the Gate City Invitational, firing an under par team score in Round One and following it up with another strong performance in Round Two before play was suspended in the late stages of the round due to darkness.

The OJRSA continues to manage wastewater treatment and storage following recent flooding. Due to potential contamination, residents and pets should avoid contact with local creeks and waterbodies. Customers should report any wastewater overflows to the OJRSA. The Coneross Creek Water Reclamation Facility is operating with minor issues, and stored flow is being treated gradually. The Duck Pond Pump Station has been reactivated to address a sanitary sewer overflow. Repairs to damaged manhole structures will be conducted once the area dries. Two pump stations remain without power, and alternative measures are being implemented. WILMORE, Ky. - The Piedmont University men's soccer team rallied past Asbury with three second half goals to in its CCS opener on Monday afternoon at Asbury.
