Jackie Smith, 60, is the oldest graduate in the Class of 2024 at South Piedmont Community College. She is set to earn an associate degree in Early Childhood Education, completing a journey that began nearly 40 years ago. Originally from Marshville, Smith started her college education while still attending Forest Hills High School. Despite challenges such as raising a son, supporting grandchildren, health issues, and work commitments, she continued her studies.
Lancaster High Alum Alex Melgar Champions Immigrant Rights at SCSL
Alex Melgar, a former Lancaster High School student and JROTC leader, recently participated in the South Carolina Student Legislature (SCSL). The SCSL is a simulated legislative body that involves students from various colleges and universities in South Carolina. Alex proposed a bill to modify a section of the South Carolina Code of Laws. His proposal aimed to provide both lawful and unlawful immigrants with access to a translator during legal proceedings related to their immigration status. The bill passed unanimously in both the committee and the house, reflecting Alex's commitment to public service and legal advocacy.
