Professor Emeritus Gombocz received the Herbert S. Schell Award for his article in South Dakota History, a journal of the State Historical Society. The award is named after historian Herbert S. Schell. Gombocz's article discusses the reaction of German speakers to language restrictions during WWI.

14 USD Medical School Graduates to Stay in South Dakota Post-Graduation
The University of South Dakota (USD) Medical School's Match Day 2024 announced the future locations of its 61 new doctors. After graduating in May, these students will continue their training at health care facilities across the U.S. They will be distributed across 21 states, with the most, 14, staying in South Dakota. Minnesota and Nebraska will each receive seven graduates, while Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and Wisconsin will each have three.
Local Law Student Teagan McNary Wins 2024 Sam Masten Moot Court Competition
The Sam Masten Moot Court Competition, an important event in legal education, has named Teagan McNary as the 2024 winner. The competition started on March 22, with 55 first-year students demonstrating their legal argument skills. McNary and Julianne Severson, the runner-up, presented their cases to a panel of legal professionals, including Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen, Justice Mark E. Salter, and attorney James Moore.
USD Physics Club and Student Services to Host Local Eclipse-Viewing Event on April 8
The Physics Club and Student Services at the University of South Dakota (USD) are planning an eclipse-viewing event on April 8, 2024. Sasha Lukina, a USD physics student, is leading the project, supported by the NASA Partner Ambassador Program and the South Dakota Space Grant. The main event will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on the Muenster University Center lawn, with peak viewing at 1:55 p.m. The physics department will offer free eclipse glasses and space-themed snacks.

Angela Jackson, the university's digital accessibility coordinator, stated the event's goal is to encourage dialogue and education about equal digital access and diverse learning needs on campus. The event will also showcase how assistive technology can help these students in their learning and access to course materials.
