Local Professor Emeritus Honored for Uncovering South Dakota's WWI-Era German Language Struggles
Professor Emeritus Gombocz received the Herbert S. Schell Award for his article in South Dakota History, a journal of the State Historical Society. The award is named after historian Herbert S. Schell. Gombocz's article discusses the reaction of German speakers to language restrictions during WWI.
Elk Point Residents Can Now Pick Up Free Landfill Vouchers at City Hall
The City of Elk Point is providing free landfill vouchers to all residents living in city limits. The voucher will allow one free dump at the Vermillion Landfill, located at 31426 Bluff Road. One voucher per property allowed. Vouchers can be picked up at City Hall.Visit here for more details.
Local Law School Dean, Fulton, Joins Tribal Issues Advisory Group to Address Sentencing Issues
Fulton, the Dean of a Law School, has been appointed to the Tribal Issues Advisory Group (TIAG). The U.S. Sentencing Commission established the TIAG to address federal sentencing issues concerning American Indian and Alaska Native defendants, victims, and offenses in Indian country. Fulton's term will last three years, with the possibility of reappointment.
South Dakota school addresses space issues for students
In 2022, Elk Point-Jefferson Community School officials attempted to pass a school bond to address space issues for their cafeteria and middle school. However, it didn't pass. Years later, the school district has made some changes and hopes to get the okay from the community.
