We sat down with Sheriff John Myers to discuss the incident that occurred early Wednesday morning involving Deputy Sheriff Klein. He gave us information about his recovery and what led to an arrest. “Let me first start off by saying that Sheriff’s Deputy Klein is in really good spirits and he is on the road to recovery. He got out of surgery yesterday afternoon I believe and is recovering and I talked to him earlier this morning and like I said he’s in good spirits and he’s expected to be released and sent home in the next couple of days. As far as Lopez, he’s not in such good shape. He’s currently confined at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office until he goes to prison, hopefully that’s how it works. He has not been arraigned yet. He probably won’t be arraigned on all the charges and when I say all the charges I’m thinking he’s got 15 charges not all from yesterday some of them were prior but, I say that because we’ve been looking for this guy for a while and we had a incident where he was involved in another chase a couple of months ago. He got away so we’ve been looking for this guy for a while and the day before yesterday we caught word that he was in an area so, we set up in that area and when he came through we stopped him. It was about that time that the vehicle stopped he decided he was gonna drive his vehicle into one of my deputies and right before the deputy was hit he put round through the windshield ofLopez which was 100% justified. When we all got there, we started investigating the incident. We found some evidence in the vehicle that Deputy Klein shot and actually injured Lopez with. So, we searched all night and all morning I think it was 4:30 AM when we finally towed the vehicle from the scene and everybody went home. We then reconvened the next morning around 11 o’clock and Lopez did exactly what we hoped he would do. He went to somebody’s house asking for help but that individual called us and about 10 of us left the station and got there with just a few minutes and surrounded the area. We started searching buildings and outbuildings and wood sheds and we found him in a hay barn hiding behind some hay and he did in fact have a bullet wound to I think it was his right shoulder. He was taken to the hospital where he underwent some surgery and then he was brought back to my jail and booked in on all of his charges. One of the charges included attempted murder. Once he got booked in, we shipped him over to Wayne County and now will let the judicial system do their job. Before we end this, I just wanna make sure that I recognize everybody that helped us. I don’t have a list in front of me but if you were out there you know who you are and we know who you are. All of the first responders that came out and provided some kind of service force that night and the next day and the effort of finding this guy and working on the crime scene, I can’t say enough good things about you and we’re forever in your debt. I just wanted to make sure everybody knew that on the tail end but, other than that like I said Klein is on his way to recovery and the bad guys in jail and going to prison real soon”.
