Did CWRU President Kaler’s words themselves amplify tensions on campus?
If the wall postings referenced in Molly Walsh’s May 9 article are quoted accurately (“Contractors spray paint protesters”), and are representative of the postings painted over, then Case Western Reserve University President Eric Kaler has labeled as “threatening, intimidating and antisemitic:” 1) an image of the Palestinian flag, representing one of the two parties to the two-state solution has been part of U.S. Middle East policy for decades; 2) a call for the end of the siege of Gaza, which the United States is pursuing with a floating pier, despite Israeli objections; 3) a plea for peace; and 4) documentation of the number of Palestinian children killed in the war. The first two points seem to imply that U.S. Middle East policy is “threatening, intimidating, and antisemitic.” I see no legitimate way to characterize the last two points with this description.
