On March 23rd and 24th, Spiketown-Reign 16u, a local club volleyball team, participated in the year-end Badger Region Championships in Milwaukee. It was the 20thth year of the Badger Region Championship and the eighthth year that REIGN has participated. Competing against teams from the Milwaukee area, Madison and around the state they went a perfect 10-0, winning all five matches and taking home the Gold Bracket Championship. It is an amazing accomplishment for these eight young ladies from Wild Rose, Almond, and Westfield. Playing three matches on Saturday, they swept Germantown, Madison, and Milton to earn the #2 seed for the playoffs. On Sunday they defeated Glendale in the Semi-Finals 25-19, 25-19 to set up a Championship match against I AM Volleyball club from Grafton. The Championship Match was won 25-17, 25-20 to secure the first Badger Region Championship in REIGN history. Spiketown-Reign is a 501c3 non-profit volleyball club located in Wautoma. Teams are formed for girls aged 10-18 from the surrounding area. Tryouts begin in October and tournaments begin in January through March.

The 2024 Wautoma softball season is already upon us with somewhat cooperative March weather. This year’s Varsity team comes with a lot of youth along with some veteran players. The 2024 Wautoma softball team will have to replace five seniors from last year second place SCC team in Ava Stahl (SS) SCC Player of the Year, Ava Butt (C) 1st Team SCC Catcher, Syndey Dunn (3B) 2nd-Team SCC Infielder, Braelynn Pica (Utility) and Natalie Perkins (DP) who played key roles in the programs recent success. However, the Hornets do return a couple SCC All-Conference representation in lone Senior Brianna Buechner (1st Team SCC Outfielder, All-District) and junior Liv Cieslik (2nd Team SCC pitcher). The Hornets also have returning letter winner starters Juniors Larissa Piechowski (1B/P) and Kendall Gustke (3B) to go along with Bella Smith (C), Eva Thompson (OF) and Lindsey Anderson (DP/3B) vying for spots. Wautoma’s remaining position battles will come from sophomore Meaghan Marks (OF) and the rest freshmen Alexis Swanke (2B, CF, P), Madelyn Reetz (OF/2B), Myla Goddard (OF), Riley Burton (IF), Kelcey Michalski (Utility) and Sophie Klimke (C, IF). Wautoma will be challenged to regain the SCC crown with a solid 2023 SCC Champs Adams-Friendship team along with Westfield, Wisconsin Dells and Nekoosa battling for supremacy. The Lady Hornet’s season opened on March 21 with a non-conference win versus Wild Rose along with three games this past Friday and Saturday at the Rhinelander Hodag Dome Tournament. The Wautoma Hornet softball team was able to beat the visiting Wild Rose Wildcats on March 21 17-7 in six innings on both teams’ opening game at Bird Creek Park. Cali Havlovitz was able to get the Ladycats on the board first with a lead-off single and eventually scoring on a passed ball making it 1-0. However, the Lady Hornet squad answered back while erupting for eight runs managing four free passes and three hits sprinkled in. The Lady Hornets scored four of the runs after two-outs with Liv Cieslik put the finishing touches with a 2-RBI double for a 8-1 lead. Wild Rose struck back in the third inning with two runs as Havlovitz started the inning off with a double, Allison Henschel reaching on an error and both eventually scoring on a Wautoma defensive throwing error with two outs to cut the deficit to 8-3. Wild Rose would shrink the gap to 8-6 in the fourth inning on a Keyva Kingston hit, Davianna Lund walk and Havlovitz RBI single. Wautoma responded with three of their own making it 11-6 on hits by Cieslik and RBI single by Larissa Piechowski along with small ball playing a role. The Lady Hornets widened the lead to 15-6 in the fifth inning on an Alexis Swanke walk, Cieslik single, Gustke reaching on an error, Bella Smith sacrifice bunt, Piechowski walk, Eva Thompson RBI fielder’s choice and Lindsey Anderson RBI single. Wild Rose would add one more run in the 6th inning with Havlovitz earning a free pass and eventually scoring. The Lady Hornets finalized things with a Madelyn Reetz walk, Brianna Buechner bunt single then error scoring Reetz and Swanke hitting a sacrifice RBI fly ball to create a 17-7 game. Wautoma’s pitcher Cieslik recorded the win going the distance while striking out seven with four walks and five Wild Rose hits. The Lady Hornets were able to get nine hits while the Wildcats had five with the leading hitters being Wild Rose’s sparkplug Havlovitz (3x3, 3B, RBI, 4 runs and BB) and Wautoma’s Cieslik going (3x4, 2B, 3 RBI’s, 2 runs and SB). “It is always nice when you can get out in March and get games in before conference play,” Coach Butt mentioned. This game allowed us both to get live game situational opportunities, he added. Wautoma’s overall record is 1-0 with Wild Rose being 0-1.

The Wautoma Girls High School Bowling Team finished their regular season undefeated. They earned a chance to competek in the State Tournament on Saturday, March 2 at Ashwaubenon Lanes. If they place in the top five they will move on to the finals on Sunday. Kylei Sullivan and Kaydance Blader also qualify for the singles portion. They will individually compete on Friday, March 1 for a chance to move on to the singles finals. The bowling team includes: Coach Dean Tschurwald, Savannah Heise, Nelly Rodriguez, Olivia Miller, Kylie Sullivan, Lindsey Anderson, and Kaydance Blader. Not pictured Coach Dale Risch.

It had been 41 years since the Wautoma Boys Basketball program had been able to hang a conference championship banner, but on Thursday night, Feb. 22nd, on Senior Night, against conference rival Westfield, the Hornet Boys’ team did just that. Wautoma went 9-1 in conference this year and 19-5 overall. That 9-1 record in conference is good enough to be co-champions of the South Central Conference with Wisconsin Dells. It was a total team effort as the Hornets beat Westfield 76-33 to retain Ozzie the Goat and earn a share of the South Central Conference Championship.

The Wautoma Hornets had already proven themselves in the regular season, and didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They enjoyed a cozy 50-35 victory over Brillion on Friday. Given Wautoma's advantage in MaxPreps' Wisconsin basketball rankings (they are ranked 128th, while Brillion is ranked 297th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

The Westfield Pioneers were able to rise above Montello’s Hilltoppers for a 63-46 win. First on the board was actually the Montello Hilltoppers. It did not take long for the Pioneers to kick it in gear for a first period lead of 34-22. Westfield was nailing the 3-point landings. The Hilltoppers seemed to be struggling with rebounds, however Montello was very aggressive on the court in offensive plays.

Brianna Buechner placed first at the Girls’ Sectional Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 17, making her the first girl in Wautoma’s school history to advance to the state tournament.
