    Ingredients:

    Meatballs:

    • 1 small yellow onion, chop finely
    • 2 slices of soft white bread, crusts removed and torn into pieces
    • 12 oz ground beef
    • 12 oz ground pork
    • 1 large egg
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
    • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

    Creamy Gravy:

    • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups beef stock
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
    • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

    For Serving:

    • Creamy mashed potatoes
    • Lingonberry or cranberry sauce

    Instructions:

    1. Prepare the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the torn bread pieces with the chopped onion. Add the ground beef, ground pork, egg, nutmeg, allspice, garlic powder, pepper, and salt. Mix thoroughly until well blended.
    2. Shape and Cook: Form the mixture into small, bite-sized meatballs. Heat the cooking oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs in batches, turning them until they're evenly cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Transfer them to a plate and keep warm.
    3. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly golden. Slowly whisk in the beef stock and bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir in the heavy cream, and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
    4. Serve: Pour the creamy gravy over the meatballs and serve hot with a side of mashed potatoes and a spoonful of lingonberry or cranberry sauce. Enjoy!

    Substitutions:

    • Meat options: Swap out pork for ground turkey or chicken if you prefer a leaner option.
    • Gravy: For a lighter sauce, use milk instead of heavy cream.
    • Bread: Substitute white bread with whole wheat or gluten-free bread, based on your preference.

    Storage Directions:

Store any leftover meatballs and gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. You can also freeze the meatballs (without sauce) for up to 3 months and reheat them in the gravy when ready to serve.

This version captures the classic Swedish flavor but offers an easy and delicious twist!
