A May 15 Tahoe Truckee Unified School District Board of Education Meeting approves the advancement of a new skate park in Tahoe City. See announcement below.

While this doesn’t finalize the decision of starting construction, it’s a huge step in the right direction to see the first public skatepark in Tahoe City. District staff must now work on an agreement with Tahoe City Public Utility District to set a plan in motion.

The Scotty Lap Foundation , founded by Amy and Jason Lapp, has been the driving factor in this process for two years now, and their hardwork and dedication to their son’s life and passion is benefitting the whole community.

Scotty tragically lost his life in a skiing accident at Alpine Meadows in February 2022, but his legacy lives on through his never ending enthousiasm and his parents.

“The Scotty Lapp Foundation is dedicated to empowering youth by making ski, snowboard and skate more accessible to underserved communities and assisting athletes in reaching their full potential,” from their website.

Scotty’s winters consisted of skiing as much as he could and competing in youth freeride competitions, and his offseason turned into skating. But Tahoe City is void of skateparks, and it made one of his passions harder to pursue.

It was his dream to have a skatepark in Tahoe City, and he had the idea to start a petition for a local skatepark.

The closest parks to Tahoe City are in Truckee and Incline which makes it hard for kids without driver’s licenses to get to a park.

Skating sometimes gets a bad reputation in the mainstream world of hooligans with nothing better to do or destroying public property, but the opportunities to skate can be scarce, forcing skaters to use what they have.

Skateboarding is now an olympic sport, which is to the dismay of some skaters, but it sheds light on the sport in a different way for different people. It can now be seen as a valid career option, the same as an olympic skier, gymnast, or basketball player.

But that’s not the point. It’s obviously not a career option for every kid with a skateboard, but it can still be a passion, a fun activity, something to progress and grow at, a way to come together as a community, and so much more.

    See you at Scotty's!
