EASTON — Approximately $40,000 was donated in scholarships and to local organizations — including local volunteer fire companies, children’s organizations and churches — on Saturday morning by American Legion Post 77.
Post 77 Judge Advocate Walter Black said Post 77 feels proud to be able to donate this money.
“It’s consistent with our mission of assisting veterans and their families, and children and youth, and the community at large,” he said. “We feel very good about that.”
Black said making these donations addresses the needs of the community, living up to the Post 77’s responsibilities as an American Legion organization. He said a lot of the money for these donations, which Post 77 makes annually, is raised through the slot machines located at the post.
Donations were made to volunteer fire departments in Talbot County, nearly 20 churches and a variety of other organizations, such as the Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers, the Talbot Senior Center, the Frederick Douglass Honor Society and the Neighborhood Service Center.
Representatives from these organizations came out Saturday morning to the American Legion to accept the donations.
Black said the event was wonderful and all the recipients were “very pleased.”
According to a statement from one recipient organization, Channel Marker, which offers mental health and wellness support, this donation will help improve the wellbeing of its clients’ lives.
Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers Executive Director Cristy Morrell said the event Saturday was “lovely.”
“They support such amazing organizations in our community,” she said. “And they’re not always organizations that I think people are aware of. And so, that they include us in with those organizations is very humbling and we’re very honored.”
Morrell said the “generous” donation will be used for enrichment programming and tuition assistance at the Children’s Center’s Trappe and Easton locations.
“I’m just honored that they consider us a worthwhile cause,” she said.
