Wildlife cruise to feature sea otter history
The Sitka Maritime Heritage Society hosts a sea otter history and wildlife cruise this week. In addition to looking for marine wildlife, guests will hear from speaker Jerry Deppa about the history of sea otters and their reintroduction to the area in the 1960s. Akiak residents say weeks without power have ruined frozen food stores, drained savings
Akiak has three diesel generators that are supposed to power the town, but they’ve been plagued by mechanical problems. Since mid-June, Akiak has been without consistent municipal power. It’s the second extended outage the 450-person community has faced in the past two months. In May, the community dealt with a five-day outage. City administrator Aleck Jackson has said that it’s part of a bigger pattern.
2024 Fourth of July fireworks guidelines
A fireworks ban due to fire risk is currently not anticipated. If fire risk increases and state or local fire marshals institute a ban, CBJ will issue an information release. The City and Borough of Juneau reminds the public of these rules for personal fireworks use during the holiday weekend:

An initiative asking voters whether Juneau should ban large cruise ships on Saturdays starting next year has qualified for the local ballot this fall. The City and Borough of Juneau clerk’s office announced on Monday that the group leading the “Ship-Free Saturday” ballot initiative had secured enough certified signatures to get a spot on Juneau’s Oct. 1 ballot, unless the Juneau Assembly decides to take action on the issue before then.

The melting of Alaska's Juneau ice field—which contains more than 1,000 glaciers—is accelerating and could reach a tipping point much sooner than predicted, according to research published Tuesday.
