A passenger plane pilot had the best seat in the house for stunning scenes of aurora this week.

Scott Bateman MBE was able to capture the atmospheric display from the cockpit of his Airbus A350-1000 on Sunday (11 Aug).

His images show the spectacle as he flew across the world, taking in Ireland and Chicago along the way.

West country-based Scott said: "Last night was spectacular!! I have never seen the aurora borealis so vivid with reds and purples.

"It started as we passed Chicago at 39,000ft and lasted until the dawn over Ireland when it turned purple.

"The pics are from my iPhone 15 with no editing or filters. This and meteors, and we had a front-row seat in our Airbus."

Scott is a former RAF pilot and author of a bestselling book about the Hercules military airplane, which he flew.

An aurora is a natural light display in Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions around the Arctic and Antarctic.

Auroras display dynamic patterns of brilliant lights that appear as curtains, rays, spirals, or dynamic flickers covering the entire sky.

They are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by the solar wind.
