An astronaut has captured awe-inspiring aurora and Milky Way scenes from the International Space Station.

NASA's Matthew Dominick documented the view as the spacecraft's solar arrays adjusted position against the impressive backdrop.

The Colorado native was able to shoot a timelapse as the Sun rose and brightened the scene.

Matthew said Sunday (September 1): "Reds and greens from the aurora, as well as city lights, reflect off the service module solar arrays with the Milky Way core behind the space station.

"The solar arrays and service module are bathed in a light horizon blue from a sun about to rise behind the camera."
