Why Florida State Football is a 'Concerning Addition' for SEC, Big Ten

The Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers are in the middle of potentially leaving the ACC Conference. It's not entirely clear what the future holds for both schools. However, at least for the Seminoles, it sounds like the SEC and Big Ten have no interest in adding them despite FSU wanting to join one of the two major football conferences.

Reports indicate that the SEC and Big Ten view Florida State as a "concerning addition," according to Brett McMurphy of The Action Network. It might be difficult for the Seminoles to find a new conference if they successfully split from the ACC.

"If/when the Seminoles break free from the ACC, their top choices would be to join the Big Ten or SEC because of the huge difference in television media rights revenue, sources said.

"However, there are multiple concerns about adding Florida State, sources said. Those reasons include the fact that it doesn't make financial sense for either league, 'there's no appetite for more expansion' and FSU has shown 'it's not a good partner.'"

As of now, Florida State is playing in the ACC. However, there is speculation the conference could "blow up" similar to the Pac-12. If that's the case, then numerous programs would be seeking a new conference. The popular opinion is that the top two programs in the ACC right now are Florida State and Clemson.

With that said, the thought process about Florida State could certainly change as time goes on. The school has not removed itself from the ACC as of now. But if that split becomes official, then perhaps the SEC and Big Ten will have a change of attitude. McMurphy claims that one source stated "Never say never" when it comes to FSU and the Big Ten, specifically.

"One source, however, cautioned 'never say never' about FSU going to the Big Ten because there could be a path if the ACC disintegrates."

SEC Commissioner, Greg Sankey, was asked on Monday about the possibility of adding Florida State and/or Clemson. But Sankey never showed his cards and stated multiple times "We’re focused on our 16."

Despite the reports, Florida State is routinely one of the most competitive sports schools in the nation. They are constantly in the mix in multiple sports across the board. Last season, the Seminoles fell short of making the College Football Playoffs for reasons outside of their regular season record.

We'll see how it pans out for the ACC. The college football landscape could see another big change this time next year.
