Florida A&M is in search of a new head softball coach.
After two seasons leading the Rattlers, Camise Patterson resigned to become the Alabama State Hornets’ head softball coach.
Like FAMU, Alabama State also competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Patterson replaces Todd Bradley , who stepped down as the Hornets’ head coach after five years. Alabama State finished 28-29 with a 15-9 SWAC record in 2024.
“I am deeply honored and grateful to be the next Head Softball Coach at Alabama State University,” Patterson said in a statement released by Alabama State.
“Being able to continue coaching the sport I love is a true blessing from God. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Cable and the search committee for their confidence in my abilities and this incredible opportunity. I’m excited to build on the program’s past success and look forward to being part of the SWARM!”
The reigning SWAC Co-Coach of the Year’s resignation comes four months after coaching the Rattlers to their first SWAC East divisional title and SWAC Championship appearance.
Patterson’s Rattlers fell to Jackson State in the SWAC’s Championship round.
After playing NCAA Division I college softball at Campbell University, Patterson began her coaching career as a volunteer on FAMU and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Hall of Famer’s Veronica Wiggins’ staff.
Patterson assisted the Rattlers to back-to-back MEAC championships in 2016 and 2017 before briefly leaving FAMU in 2020.
Patterson returned to FAMU as an assistant during the 2021-2022 season and was named the Rattlers’ head coach in January 2023 .
As FAMU’s head coach, Patterson has a 46-44 overall record with a 32-16 mark in the SWAC.
During Patterson’s tenure, the Rattlers had nine players earn All-SWAC honors and FAMU pitcher Zoryana Hughes was named the 2024 SWAC Pitcher of the Year.
Six of Patterson’s players have also received invitations to the Minority Prospects HBCU All-Star Game .
During the 2024-2025 softball season, FAMU and Alabama State will play two regular season series against each other as SWAC East opponents.
