Donna Adelson was back in court Monday, although it was by video, for a case management hearing in the upcoming trial for her alleged part in the murder of Dan Markel.
Her attorneys, Dan Rashbaum of Miami and Robert "Alex" Morris of Tallahassee, informed Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett and Assistant State Attorney Sarah Dugan of the motions they intend to file ahead of trial, currently set for Sept. 17.
Adelson's defense counsel noted they plan to file a motion to preclude certain police testimony and to move the trial in the Leon County Courthouse from the currently scheduled courtroom, 3G, to a new courtroom, 3B.
Courtroom 3G was where her son, Charlie Adelson, was tried and convicted for his role in Markel's death.
"We have a variety of reasons why we think that courtroom will afford our client better due process than in this courtroom," Rashbaum told the judge. No further details about the reasoning behind either motion were shared in open court prior to them being filed.
Also, a deadline of Aug. 12 was set for witness and exhibit lists.
Donna Adelson now fifth person to be charged in Dan Markel murder
Donna Adelson is the fifth person to be arrested in connection to the murder of former Florida State University law professor Dan Markel, who was shot and killed July 18, 2014 in his garage.
She was arrested Nov. 13, 2023, as she and her husband, Harvey Adelson, were trying to board a one-flight to Vietnam. Their travel plans came one week after their son, Charlie Adelson, was found guilty in Markel's murder.
Markel was killed by two Miami hit men amid an ugly custody battle between him and his ex-wife Wendi Adelson, who is Donna Adelson’s daughter and Charlie Adelson's sister.
Three others have also been convicted in the murder plot: the two hit men, Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera, and Charlie Adelson’s former girlfriend, Katie Magbanua.
