The City of Tallahassee is honoring former Mayor John R. Marks III by naming its Gemini Building on North Adams Street in his honor in a ceremony on Friday.

The 9:30 a.m. ceremony comes after the city commission unanimously voted on the new name for the city-owned office building.

"As we celebrate our city's bicentennial, how appropriate that we recognize Mayor Marks for his public service and dedication to innovating Tallahassee," current Mayor John Dailey said in a statement.

"He is the longest-serving mayor in Tallahassee's history and, notably, holds the distinction of being the first African-American elected to the position."

Marks served as the city's leadership mayor from February 2003 to November 2014. During his tenure he oversaw the revitalization of Gaines Street, the transformation of Cascades Park and FAMU Way and more, the city said in a news release.
