How to Recycle Your Halloween Candy Wrappers

According to industry data, more than $3.1 billion worth of Halloween candy is purchased in America every year! And when Halloween rolls around, along with endless amounts of candy come endless amounts of candy wrappers.

The majority of candy wrappers cannot be recycled so when all the fun of spooky season is over, piles of candy just end up in the trash (scary fact – the average trick-or-treater produces a pound of trash in just one night!).

One of the reasons most candy wrappers can’t be recycled is that they’re made with a mix of materials, including polypropylene, aluminum foil, and paper. However, one company has come up with a way to fix that.

TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Boxes

TerraCycle, an international leader in innovative sustainability solutions, has created the Zero Waste Box. The box provides a convenient recycling solution for all brands of flexible, plastic-based candy packaging and wrappers.

“In North America, TerraCycle has recycled nearly 20 million candy wrappers and snack packaging – and counting! – through our Zero Waste Boxes to date,” said Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle. “It’s frightening to know that otherwise, this waste would end up in landfills and incinerators.”

They can be placed in public spaces such as schools, community centers, local businesses, and neighborhood parks. The boxes should help encourage people to responsibly dispose of their wrappers instead of tossing them on the ground year-round.

For some specially added Halloween fun, TerraCycle has created spooky versions of the Halloween Treat Wrappers Zero Waste Box and Halloween Treat Wrappers Zero Waste Pouch.

After the boxes and pouches are full, they can be returned to TerraCycle for processing. The wrappers are cleaned, melted, and recycled into pellets that can be used to make new products. How cool is that!
