A reprieve from Tampa Bay’s heat is expected this weekend. Here’s why.

Floridians are painfully aware there is little break from the wearisome temperatures that plague daily life during the summer. Each day starts the same — a walk outside morning after morning, day after day, only to be smacked by soupy, sizzling heat.

But a shiny, sweet golden nugget of dry air this weekend could finally bring a halt to the monotony of summer.

It will be “at least tolerable,” said Matt Anderson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Tampa Bay office.

    Well. We’ll take it.

The more temperate, rare summertime conditions are due to Hurricane Ernesto. The Category 1 storm is expected to pass far from Florida’s east coast this weekend, but it will pull drier air to the Tampa Bay, according to Spectrum Bay News 9.

Starting around Friday, dew points — the measure of moisture in the atmosphere — could drop to levels typical of late September or early October.

The lower the dew point, the less sticky air feels.

Dew points in the summer regularly hover in the 75 to low 80 range, according to Anderson. This weekend, dew points could drop into the upper 60s in some areas of Tampa Bay.

While drier air is in store for Tampa Bay this weekend, highs will remain toasty in the lower 90s across the region. However, nighttime temperatures will bring some reprieve: Temperatures are expected to flirt with lower 70s in Tampa. So far this month, low temperatures in Tampa have averaged 79.5 degrees.

Friday night, the coolest night of the weekend, the weather service expects temperatures to fall to 72 degrees in Tampa. It will be the coolest the area has been in months, Anderson said.

The last time temperatures fell below 73 degrees in Tampa was in May, according to weather service records.

While much of the region is likely to dip into the lower 70s, parts of Pinellas County, like St. Petersburg, can expect temperatures in the mid-70s at night.

Saturday and Sunday are expected to be Sunny with a slight breeze. By the end of the weekend, dew points are expected to begin rising to digits more typical for this time of year.
