After one too many accidents, Nicholas Slater vowed never to drive on Florida roads again. He felt safer riding his longboard in Tampa, avoiding main roads if he could.

But on Jan. 5, 2023, while Slater was skating from his house to a gas station to get an AriZona iced tea, he was hit and killed by a driver who didn’t see him crossing the street.

It has been almost two years since Slater was killed, and his family is still trying to understand why the driver was never held responsible for his death.
