Why Florida Gators still plan to use DJ Lagway and Graham Mertz

GAINESVILLE — DJ Lagway’s record-breaking first start for the Florida Gators is not changing Billy Napier’s plan.

Napier still intends to play the five-star freshman quarterback and incumbent Graham Mertz against Texas A&M on Saturday.

“We’re going to do what’s in the best interest of the team,” Napier said Monday. “I think both these players can make our team better.”

If you followed Napier carefully enough Monday and all offseason, you can read between the lines and see an implied but invisible word in that last sentence: They can make the Gators better together.

Yes, Lagway was remarkable with Mertz (concussion) sidelined.
