ST. PETERSBURG — On the seventh floor of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, a tiny miracle occurs. Liam Olivera, 3, cracks a smile.

It’s fleeting — erased in the split-second it takes the toddler to flop his little body onto its side and bury his face in the hospital bed. But for a moment, it was there.
