As forecasters watch a tropical disturbance that could become a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, some local governments in the Tampa Bay area started offering sandbags Monday.

Officials note that while sandbags can be an effective tool to prevent minor water intrusion, they do not stop storm surge or major flooding.

This story will be updated as more governments offer sandbags.

    Here’s what to know:

    Pasco County

Two self-serve sandbag sites are open 24 hours:

    • Pasco County Public Works (C-Barn), 30908 Warder Road, San Antonio
    • Magnolia Valley Golf Course, 7223 Massachusetts Ave., New Port Richey

Two additional self-serve sandbag sites will be open from sunrise to sunset until further notice:

    • Veterans Memorial Park, 14333 Hicks Road, Hudson
    • Pasco Fire Rescue Station #29, 6907 Dairy Road, Zephyrhills

Sand and bags will be restocked daily if weather permits. Residents are advised to bring their own shovels.

    City of Dunedin

Prefilled sandbags will be available in the Highlander Park parking lot, 903 Michigan Blvd., from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday until supplies last. Once the prefilled bags are gone, sand and bags will be available.

Proof of residency is required, and there is a 15-bag limit. Sand, bags and shovels will be available on-site. Assistance will be provided for those with special needs.

For more information, call the city’s Public Services Division at 727-298-3232 or 727-298-3233.

    City of Pinellas Park

Prefilled sandbags will be available in the parking lot at 6151 78th Ave N. from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday if weather permits.

Additionally, a self-serve sandbag site will be open at Helen Howarth Park, 6301 94th Ave., from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Proof of residency is required, and there is a 10-bag limit.
