A National Hurricane Center graphic released at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024 shows that the Tampa Bay region could see 5 to 8 feet of storm surge from Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, which was expected to become Tropical Storm Helene and eventually a major hurricane. The big story: With the possibility of a major Hurricane Helene threatening, schools across Florida were keeping a wary eye on the track as leaders contemplate next steps.

Schools across the Tampa Bay region, which sits in the forecast cone, remain open today. Officials said they would announce later in the day whether they’ll stay that way the rest of the week, as the storm’s path becomes more clear.
