The big story: Reopening schools as soon as possible after Hurricane Milton blew through Tampa Bay was a key goal for area school district officials.

Students and the community thrive on normalcy and routine, they said. And as soon as it became safe, with shelters closed and cleaned (Herald-Tribune), resuming classes would become a first step in the process.

Even as students and staff returned, though, some areas still had major flooding that caused repeated redrawing of bus routes to campuses.
