Defense attorneys ask judge to release Florida man charged in wife’s disappearance
FORT LAUDERDALE — Attorneys for the husband of a Fort Lauderdale woman who disappeared in Spain are again asking a judge to reconsider the decision to keep him in prison in a motion filed Tuesday, arguing that officials arrested David Knezevich on kidnapping charges only to keep him detained while they investigate his wife’s disappearance as a murder.
Deputies identify man shot near Bruce B. Downs Boulevard in New Tampa
Hillsborough deputies have identified the man who was fatally shot on a New Tampa street on Monday. Kyle John Prisco, 24, was found shot on Regents Park Drive, off the 19000 block of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The shooting happened shortly before...
Republican ‘betrayal’ sets up bizarre Florida campaign
Carey Baker left the Lake County Supervisor of Elections Office just after the noon qualifying deadline Friday, confident he had wrapped up a fourth term as property appraiser, his third in a row without an opponent and his second without his name even appearing on the ballot. Baker, you see,...
Citizens insurance seeks maximum 14% rate hike on Florida policies
TALLAHASSEE — More than 1 million customers with Citizens Property Insurance, the state’s insurer of last resort, could see their rates go up by hundreds of dollars when they renew next year. The corporation’s board of governors on Wednesday approved a proposed 14% rate increase overall for its...
Veteran Tampa homicide prosecutors take new roles in state attorney’s office
TAMPA — Two of Tampa’s longest-tenured homicide prosecutors will take on new roles at the Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office. John Terry, a prosecutor for more than 30 years, will become the chief of the office’s major crimes unit, a newly created supervisory position in which he will lead the team that focuses on homicides, DUI manslaughter and gun violence cases.
Yaya Diaby planning to have more fun in his second season with Bucs
TAMPA — Yaya Diaby took the snub in stride. When Pro Football Focus last month named its top 32 linebackers entering the 2024 season, it recognized Bucs veteran inside linebacker Lavonte David at No. 6. But it didn’t mention any of their outside linebackers, including Diaby, who who led the team in sacks last season as a rookie.
Outback issued this St. Pete vegan restaurant a cease and desist for its ‘Bloomin’ Onion’ product
So much for having a little fun with your food. A playful spin on a popular Outback Steakhouse dish was short-lived, after a St. Petersburg restaurant received a cease-and-desist letter from Outback’s parent company last week. Vegan restaurant Good Intentions had been selling a crispy-fried “Onion Blossom” — a...

After the slowest start to a hurricane season in a decade, the first named storm of the season, Tropical Storm Alberto, formed Wednesday. Tropical Storm Alberto, a wide-reaching, lumbering storm, was about 295 miles south-southeast of Brownsville, Texas, around 11 a.m. The storm is moving west at about 9 mph, and maximum sustained winds were 40 mph, according to forecasters.
Potential Tesla store in the works for Wesley Chapel
WESLEY CHAPEL — Over the years, Wesley Chapel has added upscale car dealership after upscale car dealership, from Lexus to Audi to BMW. Now, it may be close to adding Tesla, the popular electric vehicle company run by Elon Musk. While it is still undergoing review, a dealership featuring...
Does humor in highway safety signs go too far?
States have had their fun with highway safety messages, posting everything from Taylor Swift lyrics to discourage texting in Mississippi, to a “vibe check” — winking at Gen Z — to encourage seat belt use in Arizona. Such messages are shown intermittently on thousands of highway...
Want a good steak? Here are 5 places to get one, and the best way to eat it
ST. PETERSBURG — Sometime during the hazy days of the early pandemic, I had a hankering for steak. It was hot and rainy outside in the late summer or early fall of 2020, when afternoon thunderstorms carried well into the evening and I was still spending most of my nights alone.
Critics blame lawmakers as Florida school districts close campuses
The big story: The Miami-Dade County School Board on Tuesday approved several new attendance zones as the district prepared to close two under-used schools that serve primarily poor and minority students. The plan follows a trend in several Florida school districts that are closing and “repurposing” buildings in an effort...

How a Black couple from the 1930s had a hand in Habitat for Humanity’s 900th home
It started with $800 and a dream. The year was 1936, Florida was under the rule of Jim Crow and Black people were barred from most schools, restaurants, theaters and pools. But Chester and Corrine Gooden — sweethearts from Ocala — had come into some money and were wanting land of their own.
Jimmy Buffett’s new Tampa cruise and the question of legacy
I feel most insignificant gazing up at the stars or pondering what happens inside a supermassive black hole. Or, you know, reading how Harvard researchers recently said aliens could be on Earth passing as humans, which, correct me if I’m wrong, is the plot of “Men in Black.”
With all the money thrown at QBs, is Baker Mayfield still a bargain here?
TAMPA — All in all, you would rather have Patrick Mahomes. Or Joe Burrow. Maybe Lamar Jackson, probably Josh Allen. As much as Baker Mayfield endeared himself to Tampa Bay last season, no one is suggesting the Bucs quarterback is among the very best in the NFL. But how...
As family mourns, prosecutors drop charges in fatal St. Petersburg crash
ST. PETERSBURG — On an afternoon in July, one Toyota SUV slammed into another on 22nd Avenue North. First responders found the driver, Sharon Johnson, and her granddaughter, Josalyn Lawson, bleeding inside the broadsided Toyota RAV4. The two had left home to run a routine errand. Johnson didn’t survive her injuries.
The Trop is a great place to catch a game | Letters
There’s no better place to watch a baseball game than a covered, air-conditioned stadium. Moving to Tampa Bay from the Midwest, I appreciate not having to sit in the sun during a summer game or having to wait for hours for a rain delay.
Rays get delayed by rain, then walked off by Twins
MINNEAPOLIS — The nearly 1 1/2-hour rain delay in the fifth inning officially turned Tuesday into a long night. Blowing two multi-run leads, having closer Pete Fairbanks leave with a right thumb issue and then getting walked off by the Twins 7-6 made it even worse for the Rays.
